Lung Lessonssm
Making Smart Decisions About Lung Health

Project Overview

Lung Lessons is a program designed to educate children about lung health and the dangers of tobacco, and to help them make smart decisions about tobacco use. The program is geared to children in grades three through six. Lung Lessons was developed by a partnership between The Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues (Congressional Caucus), the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), and The CHEST Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the ACCP.

The Lung Lessons kit provides all the materials necessary to present a one-hour program to children in a school or community group setting. The program provides a brief overview of the human respiratory system, a discussion of asthma and its triggers, and an extensive presentation on the dangers of smoking and tobacco use. Lung Lessons is interactive and fun, and can be easily adapted for children in 7th and 8th grade students as well.

The Lung Lessons kit includes:

  • a brief script for use when making the initial contact with a school or community group
  • a packet of informational materials to give the teacher or community group administrator describing the Lung Lessons program, the ACCP, and The CHEST Foundation
  • a complete script for making the full presentation
  • follow-up materials for the school or community group
  • a laminated poster of the human respiratory system The Lung Lessons kit is available on request at The CHEST Foundation.
