Tobacco Prevention
ACCP Industry Advisory Council and The CHEST Foundation’s Community Outreach Event

The CHEST Foundation and the ACCP Industry Advisory Council sponsored yet another successful Community Outreach Event on October 22, 2007, at Kinzie Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois. Volunteers from the Women’s Health NetWork presented the Lung Lessonssm program, developed by The CHEST Foundation, to fifth and sixth graders. The children are taught facts about asthma, the dangers of smoking, and overall good lung health. This event takes place annually during the CHEST meeting. Volunteers are always welcome and we encourage everyone to participate. Please contact Sue Ciezadlo at sciezadlo@chestnet.org for more information.

Tobacco prevention has been a longstanding area of focus for the ACCP and The CHEST Foundation. Through the development of educational resources that help ACCP members address tobacco-related issues in their communities, The CHEST Foundation has become a leader in local, state, and national tobacco prevention advocacy and programming. Among those resources is the Make the Choice: Tobacco or Health? Speakers Kit CD-ROM.   A collection of 180 PowerPoint slides, the Speakers Kit was created as a tool to assist those giving customized presentations on the dangers of tobacco and smoking, especially for girls and women. The Speakers Kit is great for use for presentations to medical professionals, college students, community groups, and more.

The Speakers Kit has been culturally adapted for use in Asian countries. The Speakers Kit Asian Edition is currently available in English. It has been translated into Korean, Vietnamese, and Chinese, and is also available for use in the Philippines and Malaysia.

The French Edition Speakers Kit is the work of Olivier L. Axler, MD, FCCP, who generously donated his time to the American College of Chest Physicians and The CHEST Foundation to prepare this French translation the 3rd Edition Women & Girls, Tobacco & Lung Cancer CD-ROM. This version is available for downloading only.

The Evils of Tobacco CD-ROM, another extension of the original Speakers Kit, was developed for use on the Indian subcontinent to help stem the use of tobacco products. The CD has two parts: a 180-slide PowerPoint speakers' kit and a 12-minute self-extracting documentary. The documentary is also available separately as a VHS tape. The CD-ROM is available in the following languages: English, Telegu, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, and Marathi. The video is available in English. Please contact Teri Ruiz at truiz@chestnet.org to obtain a free copy of either the Evils of Tobacco CD-ROM or VHS tape.

Aimed at health professionals and other adults working with children in grades 3 to 6, the Educational Guide on Lung Health for Elementary School Students features lessons, handouts, activities and resources.   Lessons are designed for half-hour or hour-long sessions, depending on the activities used. They may be incorporated into health, science or social science classes or used in after-school activities.   The asthma lessons help students develop a basic understanding of the lungs and asthma and how they can support classmates with asthma. The antitobacco unit not only shows students how the lungs work and the health effects of smoking but also teaches them ways to resist smoking.   Suggested group activities, including role-playing, as well as written games, exercises and quizzes are included to support the lessons.   The Guide is available in English and Spanish.

Can't Run, Can't Hide CD-ROM for Kids
This hip-hop tobacco prevention song and video were written and choreographed for The CHEST Foundation by The Happiness Club, a group of Chicago kids who sing, dance, rap, and create their own material. Diverse in age, race, and socioeconomic background, The Happiness Club kids sing out against violence, smoking, drug abuse, and prejudice and say "YES" to education, racial harmony, high self-esteem and global humanity. "Can't Run, Can't Hide" is also available in VHS format.
