| Tobacco-Free with the FDNY |
| Since it was established, The CHEST Foundation has been committed to eliminating tobacco addiction and the scourge of diseases related to smoking. The New York Fire Department (FDNY) Smoking Cessation Program is just one of the many anti-tobacco and lung health programs The CHEST Foundation has developed and supported. The FDNY Smoking Cessation Program was initiated in 2002, as a result of the 9/11 World Trade Center tragedy. With support from The CHEST Foundation, ACCP member David Prezant, MD, FCCP, Deputy Medical Officer of the New York Fire Department, created the first-ever smoking cessation program for firefighters, rescue workers, and their spouses. The FDNY Smoking Cessation Program is a 12-week tobacco cessation program that combines nicotine replacement therapies and other medications with continuous behavior support and regular medical evaluations from smoking cessation experts. This multi-modal approach incorporates proven methods of smoking cessation with the unique needs of rescue workers.
