The CHEST Foundation's Ambassadors Group Projects

Ambassadors Group Humanitarian Award

The Ambassadors Group will fund a third Ambassadors Group Humanitarian Recognition Award of $5,000 to be presented at the 2008 Making A Difference Awards Dinner by current Chair, Zorita Thomas. The purpose of the award is to support The CHEST Foundation in honoring ACCP members who are reaching out either nationally or internationally to “made a difference” in respiratory health through education and medical support.

The Ambassadors Group members have been donating funds to support a third Humanitarian Recognition Award recipient all year. Members are given the option to donate funds when they renew their membership dues and are also encouraged to donate funds in honor of someone’s birthday or special event of someone special in their life.

The Ambassadors Group Award Committee, composed of the past chairs and present chair will select the recipient of the third Ambassadors Humanitarian Recognition Award based on the following criteria:

  • The extent to which the project improves the lives of the people it serves
  • The number of people served by the project
  • The lack of access to other health-care options for the people served, due to economic or geographic constraints

With this award, the Ambassadors hope to continue to link the Ambassadors Group to the philanthropic efforts of The CHEST Foundation in their support of the ACCP.

If you are interested in donating to this award or for more information, please contact Sue Ciezadlo at (847) 498-8363 or sciezadlo@chestnet.org.

Ambassadors Group Youth Tobacco Education Program

The Ambassadors Group members have been involved in promoting tobacco prevention to youth in schools, both nationally and internationally. By the end of 2006-2007 school year, Ambassadors will have presented the Lung Lessons™ curriculum to students in China, Romania, Turkey, Guatemala, Michigan, Alaska, and Wisconsin. Additional presentations are planned for Connecticut, Florida, and Indiana. Through the ambassadors, school nurses and teachers have been educated and trained to carry on the tobacco prevention efforts of The CHEST Foundation. These professionals have given or will give lessons on prevention in Switzerland, Alabama, Florida, and Alaska.

The materials and educational content for the presentations are provided by The CHEST Foundation. However, some Ambassadors have created their own educational tools. The new CD, Make the Choice: Tobacco or Health? can be downloaded from The CHEST Foundation’s Web site at http://speakerskit.chestnet.org/SpeakersKit and provides PowerPoint slides that can be used in making presentations to children. In addition, the Love Your Lungs™ wristbands can be purchased as gifts to the students after a presentation has been given.

If you are interested in giving a tobacco education program in your local community, please contact Sue Ciezadlo at (847) 498-8363 or sciezadlo@chestnet.org.

Stories at the End of Life

Stories at the End of Life is a compilation of moving physician- and patient-written stories about individual experiences at the end of life. These short stories, poems, and reflections capture the range of emotions, decisions, and transitions that patients, families, and friends go through as they face the final phase of life.

The six themed booklets, entitled Communication; Final Days; Comfort; Peace, Acceptance and Letting Go; Poetry, Inspiration, and Reflection; and Survival, are threaded together by the sharing of personal, and often profound, stories of courage, acceptance, and inspiration. Not only is the collection a source of comfort and solace to patients and families, but it is also a valuable resource for health-care professionals who can use it as a tool for training and education in end-of-life care. These stories were collected and published by The CHEST Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American College of Chest Physicians.
