The CHEST Foundation 2008 Award for Clinical Research In Women’s Health

Award Granted
One Clinical Research Award of $10,000 will be granted for clinical research in women’s health. The grant is made directly to the institution on behalf of the winning applicant. Subjects relating to women’s health may include proposed research in studying gender differences in various diseases states, such as lung or heart disease, COPD, or lung cancer, among others.

Requirements

  • Awards are to support clinical research and not basic or bench level research.
  • Awards will be funded for the period from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009.
  • Applications should be written to include detailed goals and objectives that will be accomplished within 1 year of the starting date of the research project.
  • Applicant must be a current member of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Additional Information Required for Application
Please submit the following information along with your completed application form: (If you are applying online, follow the instructions provided as you enter data during the online application process)

  • A typed document (maximum of five pages) describing your:
    • Research project
    • Research activities planned for the award year
    • Expected career advancement in clinical research
    • Proposed project budget
    • Research experience
    • Research citations may be included beyond the five pages, but are optional
  • Letters of Support from:
    • Your departmental chairperson, with a brief description of research facilities and assurance that you will be allowed sufficient time in your schedule to complete the research project during the award year.
    • Chairperson of other collaborating departments or organizations, as applicable.
      Note: Letters of support must be included in your application packet (letters of support may be sealed in an envelope if confidentiality is important to the author).
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • A lay abstract (limit to one page, single-spaced, summary of your research project in nonscientific language)

Important: Applications missing any of the items listed above will not be accepted.

Terms

  • The Clinical Research Award in Women’s Health will be given for a 1-year term for research projects conducted between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009.
  • The award recipient must submit a progress and final report according to the Report Guidelines provided with the award recipient’s letter, including an accounting of expenses, due January 15, 2009, and July 15, 2009.
  • Indirect costs may not be deducted from this award by the research institution.
  • The award recipient may receive supplemental income in accordance with institutional policy.
  • Specific services are not required of the award recipient by the American College of Chest Physicians.

Publications
All publications and/or presentations based on research related to this award must acknowledge the award in the following manner, with grant support from The CHEST Foundation of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be evaluated by a review subcommittee of the ACCP’s Women’s Health NetWork. Each application will be given a final score by totaling the points given by each reviewer. The following areas will be given points ranging from one to five, with one being the lowest score and five being the highest (best) score: (1) significance, (2) research methods, (3) originality, (4) investigator qualifications, and (5) letters of support. All submitted applications and supporting materials become the property of The CHEST Foundation and cannot be returned to the applicant.
