The Association of Specialty Professors and The CHEST Foundation of the American
College of Chest Physicians 2008 Geriatric Development Research Award
For physicians in the first 4 years of their faculty appointment to develop and implement a basic,
clinical, or health services research project focused on a geriatric aspect of chest medicine.

Objective
The purpose of the Association of Specialty Professors (ASP)/CHEST Foundation of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Geriatric Development Research Award is to provide the impetus required for long-term career development focused on integrating geriatrics into the subspecialties of internal medicine.

Award Summary
Through a $50,000 grant each year for 2 years, an academic internist will be selected for the Geriatric Development Research Award to develop and implement a basic, clinical, or health services research project focused on a geriatric aspect of chest medicine. The award will also include travel grants up to $1,000 per meeting from ASP to attend the meetings of the American Geriatrics Society in the first and second year of the award and the ACCP in the second year of the award.

Applicants must have completed their fellowship program by June 2008 and be at a time of important career transition—that from fellowship to the first 4 years of faculty appointment.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the award, applicants must:

  • Be a member of the ACCP (contact ACCP Member Services at (847) 498-1400 or (800) 343-2227 for a membership application, or apply online at www.chestnet.org, if you are not currently a member).
  • Have US citizenship or permanent resident status classification in the United States.
  • Hold the degree of MD or its equivalent.
  • Have completed a subspecialty internal medicine fellowship leading to certification in his/her subspecialty by the American Board of Internal Medicine and be within the first 4 years of his/her faculty appointment.
  • Possess a faculty appointment by July 1, 2008; this faculty appointment should be documented in the required letters of recommendation from the applicant’s department chair and division director.
  • Commit 75% of his/her professional effort to research activities.
  • Develop and implement a basic, clinical, or health services research project focused on a geriatric aspect of chest medicine.
  • Generate and implement a career development plan focused on the geriatric aspects of chest medicine. This plan must include organizing and interacting with a mentorship team, comprising, at a minimum, four members:
    • The applicant’s research mentor as the leader of the research team
    • A subspecialist in the applicant’s field of chest medicine
    • A geriatrician
    • One other member at the applicant’s discretion
  • The plan must also include specific measures for the continued involvement of the award recipient in structured geriatrics activities, including, for example, developing appropriate educational resources, teaching the geriatric medicine aspects of his/her subspecialty, or developing subspecialty clinical services focused on geriatric patients.

Funding Guidelines

  • The award recipient will receive a $50,000 grant in July 2008 and a $50,000 grant in July 2009.
  • In addition, the award recipient will receive travel grants, up to $1,000 per meeting, from ASP to use to attend the two meetings of the American Geriatrics Society (one per year of the grant) and the ACCP in October 2009.
  • The funding can support the salary of the award recipient and/or the purchase of supplies, the salaries of technical personnel, and other resources necessary for the completion of the research project.
  • The funding cannot be used to acquire administrative or clerical support. Funding is to cover total costs; no indirect cost funds will be provided.

  • A typed document (maximum of five pages) describing your:
    A. Research experience (research citations may exceed the five-page limit and may be added as an attachment).
    B. Proposed research project, including goals and objectives.
    C. Research activities planned for the 2-year award term.
    D. Expected career advancement through specific geriatric initiatives (such as creating educational resources, teaching geriatric medicine aspects of chest medicine, and/or developing chest medicine clinical services focused in geriatric patients).

  • Letters of support from your:
  • Research mentor, with a brief description of research facilities.
  • Division director of your chest medicine subspecialty, with an explanation of why geriatric medicine is an area of focus and documenting your faculty appointment as of July 1, 2008.
  • Department chair of your chest medicine subspecialty, with an explanation of why geriatric medicine is an area of focus and documenting your faculty appointment as of July 1, 2008. The chair must also acknowledge the use of institution funds for the applicant (in the form of their salary, office space, or other support). Note: Letters of support must be included in your application packet (letters of support may be sealed in an envelope if confidentiality is important to the author).   • A current curriculum vitae
  • A budget
  • A lay abstract (limit to a one page, single-spaced summary of your research project in nonscientific language)

Progress Reports
The award recipient must provide a progress report of the research project at 1 year, due July 15, 2009. A final report is due at the end of 2 years, July 15, 2010. A final budget, outlining how the award money was spent, is also required as part of the final report.

Review Committee and Selection Process

  • The review committee consists of at least one ACCP member working in the geriatric aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine.
  • One finalist will be selected, as well as one alternate.
  • Applications for the finalist and alternate will be determined by The CHEST Foundation’s Review Committee and then submitted to the ASP Geriatric Committee for final review.

Evaluation Criteria
Each application will be evaluated by a panel of physicians weighing the following areas by assigning a number of points (number in parenthesis is total possible in that area): Quality of Application (60 points); Applicant Qualifications (15 points); Level of Institutional Support (15 points); and Career Development Plan (10 points). Each review committee member is asked to write additional comments regarding any of the above areas on each applicant’s grading form.

Awards Ceremony and Opportunities to Showcase Project

  • The award recipient will be recognized at the Convocation Awards Ceremony Honoring New Fellows on Sunday, October 26, 2008, during CHEST 2008 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • The award recipient will submit a “head shot” photograph to appear in The CHEST Foundation’s 2008 Awards booklet that will be distributed during CHEST 2008, on www.chestfoundation.org, and in other ACCP publications.
  • The award recipient will also be encouraged to submit an abstract to be judged by the Scientific Presentations and Awards Committee for poster and/or oral presentation during CHEST 2008 and CHEST 2009.
  • The award recipient will be featured in the ASP annual publication, T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program.
  • The award recipient also becomes a member of The T. Franklin Williams Scholar Program, which was created by ASP to identify and train a new generation of subspecialists prepared to meet the nation’s aging population.

Publications
All publications and/or presentations by the award recipient-based on geriatric research conducted as a result of the Geriatric Development Research Award, must acknowledge the award in the following manner, “with grant support from the Association of Specialty Professors and The CHEST Foundation of the American College of Chest Physicians.”
