The CHEST Foundation’s 2008 Award Opportunities
The CHEST Foundation has awarded more than $3 million to ACCP members to foster cutting-edge clinical research—research that can provide new treatment options for patients around the world. These research grants reflect the multidisciplinary nature of the ACCP. In 2008, The CHEST Foundation will offer a variety of clinical research awards in the areas of geriatric development, lung cancer, lung transplantation, and Alpha-1 Antitrysin (AAT) Deficiency relating to COPD. The Second Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis Award is also available to ACCP members who are FCCPs. This award grants $160,000 over the course of 3 years for a project or program that relates to the treatment of thrombosis. Take advantage of this great ACCP membership benefit and consider applying for one of the awards offered in 2008. Each application is carefully evaluated by ACCP members who have expertise in the content area of the award. The award deadline for all CHEST Foundation awards is April 30, 2008.
The Foundation will again recognize ACCP members by awarding grants, through its very successful Humanitarian Awards Program, to support the volunteer efforts of those who generously give their time and medical expertise to improve the health of people living in communities around the world. Since 1998, The CHEST Foundation has awarded over $1 million in sustaining project development grants and recognition awards given to nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations where ACCP members focus their pro bono service. This program is undergoing some major updates for 2008 that will be incorporated into the 2008 applications, which should be available after December 15, 2007.
In addition, The CHEST Foundation recognizes outstanding leadership in end-of-life care through the Roger C. Bone Advances in End-of-Life Care Award. The year 2008 marks the eighth year that this prestigious award will be given to an ACCP member involved in palliative and/or end-of-life care.

The CHEST Foundation Distinguished Scholar Awards Program
In 2000, The CHEST Foundation embarked on an endowment campaign designed to provide a significant base of funding in support of CHEST Foundation education and awards programming. The "Distinguished Scholar" program was developed to incorporate a specific area of cardiopulmonary and critical care medicine in order for ACCP members to extend their impact in clinical practice. The projects and programs undertaken by The CHEST Foundation Distinguished Scholars address public health issues or clinical practice issues that link to the improvements in the health and quality of patients' lives.
In 2008, GlaxoSmithKline and The CHEST Foundation are offering one Distinguished Scholar Award: the GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis.
