Grants
Humanitarian Project Development Grants of up to $25,000 each will be granted to ACCP members volunteering their time and expertise with a non-profit or non-governmental organization (NGO). The grant is made directly to the institution on behalf of the winning applicant. First payment of $15,000 will be granted in September 2008 and the remaining $10,000 will be granted in February 2009 upon receipt of a progress report.
The purpose of the Humanitarian Project Development Grant Program is to support significant community-based health projects world-wide benefiting from the pro bono service of ACCP members. Selected projects must show a clear impact on their community and have the potential for long-term sustainability and replicability. Leveraging of The CHEST Foundation funding with matching funding is desirable.
Applicant Requirements
- Applicant must be a current member of the American College of Chest Physicians for at least 2 years as of April 30, 2008. Applicants cannot apply for ACCP membership and an award concurrently.
- Applicants must be currently providing a voluntary service to a non-profit or non-governmental organization or service project. These grants support volunteer service in existing projects.
- The organization or service project’s primary intent must be to provide community service and not to conduct research (see www.chestfoundation.org for information on research awards programs).
- All applications and supporting materials must be submitted in English.
- Past winners of the Humanitarian Awards Program or the former Governors Community Service Award are eligible to apply for the 2008 Humanitarian Project Development Grants. ACCP members who have previously received two Humanitarian Award grants cannot apply again for additional funds in 2008.
- Past applicants to the Humanitarian Awards Program or the former Governors Community Service Awards program, who did not receive an award, may apply for the Humanitarian Project Development Grants by submitting their application in full by the April 30, 2008 deadline.
- Applicants may apply for the Humanitarian Recognition Award or the Humanitarian Project Development Grant, but not for both in the same year.
- If the project is not in the United States or Canada, documentation that the organization is a non-governmental organization is required at the time of application. This can be shown through an official letter or certificate of registration from the specific non-governmental organization where the ACCP member does his/her pro bono work.
Special Requirements for Award Recipients
- Award recipients should try to attend the Making A Difference Awards Dinner to receive their personalized crystal award.
- Recipients of the Humanitarian Project Development Grants are expected to write for publication a summary of their winning project and its outcomes.
- Award recipients must provide a final report of accomplishments, including budget accountability, and a project evaluation due to The CHEST Foundation before September 30, 2009.
- An additional report, at least 3 years but no more than 5 years from the date of receiving the award, is required to measure the long-term benefits of The CHEST Foundation’s funding of the volunteer project or service.
Application Process
Award recipients will be notified after July 15, 2008 and recognized during CHEST 2008, the ACCP Annual Scientific Assembly, at the 2008 CHEST Foundation Making A Difference Awards Dinner on Saturday evening, October 25, 2008. Applications will be evaluated by a subcommittee of The CHEST Foundation’s Pro Bono Committee. All submitted applications and supporting materials become the property of The CHEST Foundation and cannot be returned to the applicant.
