Case Competition 2009

F A Q

What is the purpose of the competition?

The purpose of this competition is to encourage teams of students to develop proposals that address one or more of the adverse impacts of smoking in the developing world. The best proposals will have high value added over current approaches and offer a clear path to implementation. Ideally proposals will have a “turnkey” quality; aside from financial backing, there should be no additional steps required to implement the proposal.

Why should I enter the case competition?

This competition gives participants the opportunity to learn more about social entrepreneurship and health issues facing developing nations. In addition, participants will gain experience in developing an international health-care project, have the opportunity to network with influential officials involved in world health issues, and make a positive social impact in developing nations.

The top two teams will receive $15,000 and $5,000 in award money, respectively, and Kellogg students may be eligible for class credits in connection with the GIM trip.

Who is allowed to participate in the case competition?

The competition is open to students currently enrolled at Northwestern University. However, each team must include at least one student who is enrolled in the Kellogg School of Management.

How can I participate if I am not part of a team?

If you want to participate but are not part of a team, you can still register. During the online registration process, say “no” when asked if you have a full team assembled. Then select “looking for a team,” and enter your school information. You will then be included with teams who are looking for additional members.

How large can the teams be?

There is a limit of six students per team.

Who will be judging the contest?

The competition will be judged by a panel of distinguished judges and will conclude in mid-May 2009.

Who is holding this competition?

This case competition is the collaborative effort of The CHEST Foundation, the Larry and Carol Levy Social Entrepreneurship Lab, and the Health Industry Management Program at Kellogg.

How do I become a participant?

Groups or individuals interested in competing can register by e-mail with Jamie Jones at jjones2009@kellogg.northwestern.edu by January 14, 2009. Provide the names and contact information for all group members at that time.
