The CHEST Foundation and the Kellogg School of Management
Case Competition 2009

C a s e   G u i d e l i n e s

Proposals should address one or more of the adverse impacts of smoking in the developing world. Proposals should include a statement of objectives, an evaluation of previous efforts, anticipated impacts on stakeholders, organizational structure, resource requirements (money, personnel and tangible assets), budgets, sources of sustainable funding, and measurable criteria for success. The best proposals should have high value added over current approaches and offer a clear path to implementation. Ideally, proposals will have a “turnkey” quality; aside from financial backing, there should be no additional steps required to implement the proposal.

The competition is open to teams of students currently enrolled at Northwestern University. Each team must include at least one student who is enrolled in the Kellogg School of Management. There is a limit of six students per team.

Each team will be assigned an advisor on behalf of The CHEST Foundation who will provide counsel on the proposals, as needed. These advisors are experienced professionals from the health-care industry and social enterprise whose insights will enrich the quality of the proposals and provide participants with additional knowledge of the subject area.

Teams will have access to experts on topics such as smoking and health, global health-care systems, and the tobacco business. The International Health Systems course (taught in the winter quarter by Dr. Joel Shalowitz) will include substantial materials relevant to this problem. Competitors are encouraged, but not required, to enroll in this course. First-year Kellogg students may want to consider combining their work on the case competition with a GIM trip.

The competition will be judged by a panel of distinguished judges and will conclude in mid-May 2009. At the conclusion of the competition, two teams will be selected as finalists and will give featured presentations at an awards dinner that will be attended by the judges, along with leaders from The CHEST Foundation, business, and government. At the conclusion of the dinner, the panel of judges will decide on a winner and a runner-up. The winning team will receive $15,000 and the runner-up, $5,000.

Groups or individuals interested in competing can register by e-mail with Jamie Jones at jjones2009@kellogg.northwestern.edu by January 14, 2009. Provide the names and contact information for all group members at that time.
