Two $10,000 awards from The CHEST Foundation and ALTANA Pharma US for Clinical Research in COPD

Requirements

  • Applicants may apply for only one type of clinical research award (COPD).
  • Each program director may support only one applicant for an award in COPD.
  • Awards are to support clinical research and NOT basic or bench level research.
  • Awards will be funded for the period from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008.
  • Requests should be written to include goals and objectives that may be accomplished within one year of the starting date of the research project.
  • Research funding received will be used to fund the clinical research project as the research mentor and program director deem appropriate (eg, funds may be used to support salary and supplies directly related to the research project).

Applicant Qualifications
Applicants must:

  1. Be citizens of the United States or Canada or have a J-1 or H-1 visa and be working in a certified United States or Canadian institution and enrolled in a subspecialty training program at the time of application.
  2. Be Affiliate Members of the American College of Chest Physicians (please contact ACCP Member Services for an Affiliate Membership application if you are not currently a member at (847) 498-1400 or (800) 343-2227 or apply online).
  3. Hold a degree of MD or its equivalent.
  4. Be enrolled in a United States or Canadian subspecialty training program in the following disciplines: allergy/immunology, cardiac electrophysiology, critical care anesthesiology, critical care intensive care, critical care medicine, infectious disease, cardiology, pediatric critical care, pediatric pulmonary disease, pulmonary disease, surgical critical care, or thoracic surgery.
  5. Show promise of a significant contribution to his/her specialty.
  6. Apply for only one type of award and be the sole applicant from the subspecialty program to apply for that type of award.

Additional Information Required for Application
The following information is required with your completed application form. If submitting online, space is provided on the application form for these areas. If submitting an application by mail, use Word documents of your research summary, etc

  • A cover page listing your name, the title of your research project, the name of the award you are applying for, and your institution.
  • Letters of support from:
    • Your research mentor, with a brief description of research facilities.
    • The program director of your subspecialty training program. Note: Letters of support must be included in your application packet (letters of support may be sealed in an envelope if confidentiality is important to the author). If submitting an application online, letters of support and any optional materials need to be mailed before the deadline of April 30, 2007.
  • A typed document (maximum of three pages) describing your:
    • Research experience
    • Research citations may exceed the three-page limit and may be added (optional)
    • Research project
    • Research activities planned for the award year
    • Expected career advancement in clinical research
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • A budget
  • A one-page summary of the research project in non-scientific language

IMPORTANT:

  • Applications missing any of the requirements listed above will not be accepted.
  • If submitting online, all supporting documents (letters of support, etc.) must be mailed before the April 30, 2007 deadline.

Terms of the Clinical Research Trainee Award

  • Each program director may support only one applicant for the award in COPD.
  • The Clinical Research Trainee Award will be given for a one-year term for research projects conducted between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008. Special approval may be requested for projects that exceed this time period.
  • Awardees are required to submit a three-page progress report due January 15, 2008 and a five-page final report due July 15, 2008.
  • Indirect costs or tuition payments may not be deducted from this award by the research institution.
  • Award recipients are required to devote a significant amount of their professional time to the clinical research project being proposed, and the same must be documented by an appropriate supervisor or mentor.
  • These funds are to be used to fund the clinical research project as the research mentor and program director deem appropriate (eg, funds may be used to support salary and supplies directly related to the research project).
  • The award recipient may receive supplemental income in accordance with institutional policy.
  • Specific services are not required of the award recipient by the American College of Chest Physicians. However, it is very important that the award recipient submit his/her progress and final reports by the deadlines stated above.

Publications
All publications and/or presentations based on research performed during the period of this award must acknowledge the award in the following manner, "with grant support from The CHEST Foundation of the American College of Chest Physicians and ALTANA Pharma US."

Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be evaluated by a review committee of physicians with expertise in the specialized area (COPD). Each application will be given a final score by totaling the points given by each reviewer. The following areas will be given points ranging from one to five, with one being the lowest score and five being the highest (best) score: 1) significance, 2) approach, 3) innovation, 4) investigator, and 5) environment. There is also an area on each evaluation form for the reviewer to add comments.
