The American College of Chest Physicians and The CHEST Foundation
Award
Application for the Third Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished
Scholar in Critical Care Medicine
APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.
Awards Background Today, the idea of an endowed chair to provide the university or medical center with the resources necessary to have a subject or research area continued in perpetuity is an established concept and necessary funding mechanism to facilitate innovation. An endowed chair honors both its donors and its recipients as it manifests to the community a commitment to a specific academic and/or research area.
The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and The CHEST Foundation, its philanthropic arm, has adopted this tradition with the creation of an endowed scholars program. The goal is to provide an interval of financial support for clinical educational projects that will improve patient care. In its role as the philanthropic arm of the ACCP, The CHEST Foundation focuses on prevention and education programs in cardiopulmonary health and broader medical issues of interest to ACCP members, their patients, and the public.
The Distinguished Scholar will represent a specialty encompassed by College membership, whose work will impact the College's global membership, extend its impact in clinical practice and improve patient care by addressing clinical issues and pressing public health and policy problems. The concept is to leverage collaboration between the Distinguished Scholar and the College’s leadership and the Critical Care NetWork in a manner that will make a difference in the treatment and outcomes of critical care patients requiring care far beyond the term of the project.
The Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine will have a 3-year opportunity to examine issues that relate to critically ill patients. The award is intended to permit the investigation of issues that are not easily supported by traditional funding, such as clinical trials or basic science. Rather, the award would support activities such as the development of public policy, patient education models, or economic analysis of treatment or care delivery in this patient group.
The ACCP and The CHEST Foundation are pleased and honored to announce the Third Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine award. As a leader in its field, Eli Lilly and Company discoveries have contributed to improving the health and lives of many generations through its commitment to innovation and quality health care. By endowing the third Distinguished Scholar, Eli Lilly and Company is reflecting the importance of promoting new knowledge about critical care medicine that will translate into improvement in clinical practice and saving lives.
Award Selection Process
The CHEST Foundation Awards Committee of the College will select the third Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine for a term of 3 years. The primary role of the Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine will be to:
- Identify one or more projects that will make an outstanding contribution to critical care medicine.
- Assist the College and its Critical Care NetWork in the development of the project’s dissemination of new critical care knowledge, fostering the promotion of best practices in patient care.
- Represent the College as the distinguished expert in the specialty area of the project(s).
To assist the Distinguished Scholar’s leadership in developing an outstanding project, a stipend of $50,000 annually over the 3-year term of the program will be provided. This stipend is not intended to fund a full time equivalent (FTE) position; but rather to fund up to a 30% FTE. A fourth year stipend of $10,000 will be awarded to the individual who will serve in a mentorship role to the fourth Distinguished Scholar position during his/her inaugural year of service. This transition year mechanism will result in a smooth transfer of leadership, particularly as many projects will have a duration beyond the Distinguished Scholar’s term, while creating a vehicle to create a Distinguished Scholar Advisory Council.
