The Third Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine Award application for 2009 is now available. In the fall of 2001, Eli Lilly and Company created a $1,000,000 endowment through The CHEST Foundation to establish the Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine Award. The goal of the award is to improve patient care with innovative ideas to address public health and policy issues. The Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished Scholar of the ACCP/CHEST Foundation will be responsible for educating physicians about new and innovative approaches for the treatment and care of critically ill patients. ACCP members who are FCCPs and involved in critical care medicine are invited to apply for this 2009 award. The winning candidate will receive $50,000 each year for 3 years, and, in the fourth year, will receive $10,000 and serve as a mentor to the next Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine.

The Second GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Respiratory Health
The ACCP, The CHEST Foundation, and GlaxoSmithKline created the GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Respiratory Health Award in 2003. By endowing the Distinguished Scholar, GlaxoSmithKline reflects the importance of developing new scientific innovations, educating physicians and their patients, and heightening public awareness regarding the proper diagnosis, management, and treatment of airways disorders. In his second year, the Second GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Respiratory Health is Sidney S. Braman, MD, FCCP, Division Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Warren Albert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, RI. His project is “The ACCP Chronic Care Model for COPD and Its Comorbidities: An Initiative for Primary Care Physicians and Other Health-care Providers To Improve the Quality of Life and Health Outcomes for Patients With COPD.”

Second GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis
In 2003, the ACCP, The CHEST Foundation, and GlaxoSmithKline created the GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis Award. In funding a second Distinguished Scholar, GlaxoSmithKline continues to reflect the importance of developing new scientific discoveries in the area of thrombosis, enhancing endeavors in educating physicians in clinical practice, and saving lives. GlaxoSmithKline’s discoveries have contributed to improving the health and lives of many generations through its commitment to innovation and quality healthcare. Beginning his first year, the Second GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis is Henry I. Bussey, PharmD, FCCP, Professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy, College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is also president of Genesis Clinical Research in San Antonio, TX. His project is “A Superior Method of Oral Anticoagulation Management to Substantially Reduce Event Rates, Improve Quality of Life, and Reduce Health-care Costs.”
