Members of The CHEST Foundation’s Ambassadors Group participate in activities aimed at improving patient care and lung health at the local level. ACCP members’ families and other committed individuals comprise the Ambassadors Group, which is open to anyone with an interest in furthering the goals of The CHEST Foundation. The members assume a leadership role by serving on one of the various committees of the Ambassadors Group to make The CHEST Foundation programs accessible to communities where they work and live.

During the past year, the Ambassadors Group has continued to thrive. The group has achieved many important goals and served as a leader in educating children in the importance of staying smoke-free and the value of good lung health. The Ambassadors Group has:

  • Helped The CHEST Foundation develop the “Lung Lessonssm: A Presenter’s Guide” DVD to inform ACCP and Ambassadors Group members how to present tobacco prevention information and good lung health practices to elementary school children.

  • Participated in the ACCP Industry Advisory Council and The CHEST Foundation’s Community Outreach Event held at Sycamore Canyon Elementary School, in Santee CA, during CHEST 2009.

  • Partnered with the AMA Alliance in Screen Out! This program focuses on writing letters and getting petitions signed and mailed to movie producers who allow smoking to be included in their movies that are still being rated PG. The intent of this program is to have these movies rated R because it is known that children are heavily influenced to start smoking when they see movie stars smoke on screen.

  • Sponsored a poster contest for children aged 8 to 14 years, with the winning design displayed on the T-shirts worn by the CHEST 2009 5K Lung Health Walk/Run participants, on posters displayed at CHEST 2009, and on the cover for the ACCP’s holiday card.

  • Created a note card gift set highlighting four of the winning designs from the annual poster contest. More than 100 elementary schoolchildren have created posters reflecting their interpretation of "Love Your Lungs," inspired from The CHEST Foundation’s Lung Lessonssm presentations.

  • Used CHEST Foundation lung health materials in their local level communities (eg, Anchorage, AK; Brookfield, WI; Detroit, MI; and Tucaloosa, AL) and presented materials at international locations in Guatemala, Romania, and China.

  • Donated funds to support the fourth Ambassadors Group Humanitarian Award recipient’s project.

  • Invited ACCP members and their families to socialize and learn more about the Ambassadors Group at its Fifth Annual Global Outreach Tea at CHEST 2009, attended by 32 people, representing 5 countries and 15 states.

  • Offered a special presentation, “Celebrating Our Diversity, Spain” during CHEST 2009.

  • Purchased and distributed Love Your Lungs® wristbands to schools where the Lung Lessonssm curriculum was presented.

  • Conducted quarterly Executive Committee conference calls to discuss marketing, communications, and membership recruitment.

  • Held business meetings and outings during the ACCP spring and summer board meetings.
