Distinguished Scholar Awards

The American College of Chest Physicians and The CHEST Foundation Award Application for the GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis

Applications for awards are now closed. DEADLINE: APRIL 30, 2008

Awards Background
Today, the idea of an endowed chair to provide the university or medical center with the resources necessary to have a subject or research area continued in perpetuity is an established concept and necessary funding mechanism to facilitate innovation. An endowed chair honors both its donors and its recipients, as it manifests to the community a commitment to a specific academic and/or research area.

The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and The CHEST Foundation, its philanthropic arm, have adopted this tradition with the creation of an endowed scholars program. The goal is to provide an interval of financial support for clinical education projects that will improve patient care. In its role as the philanthropic arm of the ACCP, The CHEST Foundation supports prevention and education programs in cardiopulmonary health and broader medical issues of interest to ACCP members, their patients, and the public.

The Distinguished Scholar will represent a specialty encompassed by College membership, whose work will impact the College's global membership, extend its impact in clinical practice, and improve patient care by addressing clinical issues and pressing public health and policy problems. The concept is to leverage collaboration between the Distinguished Scholar and the College’s leadership and the Pulmonary Vascular Disease NetWork in a manner that will make a difference in the treatment and outcomes of patients with thromboembolism requiring care.

The GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis will have a 3-year opportunity to examine issues that relate to patients with thromboembolism. The award is intended to permit the investigation of issues that are not easily supported by traditional funding, such as the development of public policy, patient education models, or economic analysis of treatment or care delivery in this patient group.

The ACCP and The CHEST Foundation are pleased and honored to announce the Second GlaxoSmithKline Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis award. As a leader in its field, GlaxoSmithKline’s discoveries have contributed to improving the health and lives of many generations through its commitment to innovation and quality health care. By endowing a second Distinguished Scholar, GlaxoSmithKline is reflecting the importance of promoting new knowledge about thromboembolism that will translate into improvement in clinical practice and saving lives.

Award Selection Process

The CHEST Foundation Awards Committee of the College will select the Second Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis for a term of 3 years. The primary role of the GlaxoSmtihKline Distinguished Scholar in Thrombosis will be to:

  • Identify one or more projects that will make an outstanding contribution to the understanding and treatment of thromboembolism.
  • Assist in the College's development of these projects to disseminate new knowledge about thromboembolism and foster the creation of best practices in patient care.
  • Represent the College as the distinguished expert in the specialty area.

To assist in the development of outstanding projects, the Distinguished Scholar will receive a stipend of $50,000 annually over the 3-year term of the program. This stipend is not meant to fund a full time equivalent (FTE) position; it is meant to fund up to a 30% FTE. A fourth year stipend of $10,000 will be awarded to the individual who will serve in a mentorship role to the third Distinguished Scholar position during his/her inaugural year of service. This transition year mechanism will result in a smooth transfer of leadership, particularly because many projects will have a duration beyond the Distinguished Scholar’s term, while creating a vehicle to create a Distinguished Scholar Advisory Council.
