| When a patient is critically ill, families look to their physicians and nurses for reassurance and comfort. The CHEST Foundation supports members' efforts through its commitment to improving the care of critically ill patients, and by providing support for patients and families who are facing issues at the end of life. The Critical Care Family Assistance Program In 2001, The CHEST Foundation developed the Critical Care Family Assistance Program to fulfill the unmet needs of families of critically ill patients in hospital intensive care units and to foster better communication between the health-care team, patients, and their families. Through financial support, The CHEST Foundation helps hospital teams adapt the program to meet their individual needs and provides assistance in implementing the program in their critical care departments. The program includes such elements as a computer station with information about specific diseases, hospital, and social services. Hotel and meal vouchers donated by local vendors are also provided.
The 2008 Roger C. Bone Award for Advances in End-of-Life Care
The Roger C. Bone Advances in End-of-Life Care Award was created in 2000 to recognize an ACCP member who demonstrates outstanding leadership in end-of-life care. This award honors the late Roger C. Bone, MD, Master FCCP, who wrote about the ethical and humanistic issues surrounding end-of-life decisions and stressed the importance of communication among physicians and their patients. This award recognizes a physician whose project or service has shown improved communication, compassion, and effective listening between themselves and their patients and families, support of palliative and hospice care, and/or teaching other physicians. This award is not for research or to provide seed money for a new end-of-life care project, but instead focuses on leadership in end-of-life care on the international, national, or local level. APPLICATIONS NOW CLOSED.
