The Roger C. Bone Award for Advances in End-of-Life Care

Applications are now closed. DEADLINE: APRIL 30, 2008.

Purpose
The Roger C. Bone Advances in End-of-Life Care Award was created in 2000 to annually recognize members of the American College of Chest Physicians who have demonstrated leadership in end-of-life care. This award honors the late Roger C. Bone, MD, Master FCCP, who wrote about the ethical and humanistic issues surrounding end-of-life decisions and stressed the importance of communication among physicians and their patients. Dr. Bone was a Master Fellow and Past President of the College. The purpose of this award is to recognize physicians whose project/service has shown improved communication, compassion, and effective listening between themselves and their patients and families, support of palliative and hospice care, and/or teaching other physicians. This award is not for research or to provide seed money for a new end-of-life or palliative care program or project but instead focuses on leadership in end-of-life care, either on the international, national, or local level.

Application Requirements
Applicants must be members of the American College of Chest Physicians with experience in palliative and end-of-life care. Applicants must have the endorsement of another ACCP member. At least one letter (and no more than three) from a colleague or mentor who supports the project/service is required, along with the completed application and current curriculum vitae. Related articles, publications, and/or photos are optional.

Application Process and Recognition
Applications are available by clicking on the links below after November 12, 2007, and are due April 30, 2008. Supporting materials must be postmarked April 30, 2008, or earlier. One award recipient will be selected by early June 2008 and recognized at the Convocation Ceremony during CHEST 2008, the ACCP Annual Scientific Assembly, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition, the award recipient will receive complimentary registration to CHEST 2008, a personalized crystal award, and a $10,000 grant for his/her end-of-life care project/service. It is highly recommended that the award recipient plan to attend CHEST 2008 to receive his/her award in person.

Review Committee
Award Co-Chairs, D. Robert McCaffree, MD, Master FCCP, and Rosemary Bone Mason, RN, have convened a Review Committee comprising leaders in the field of end-of-life care, most of whom are members of the ACCP Palliative and End-of-Life Care NetWork.

Evaluation Criteria
